With two challenging courses, an awesome climb and plenty of inspiration from record breaking long distance cyclist Mark Beaumont, the Oban Sportive April 21 & 22 promises to be the adventure event of the outdoor season!
This is a chance to climb, cycle and chat with the legendary Mark Beaumont, who holds the world record for cycling round the world, completing his 18,000-mile (29,000 km) route in less than 79 days. He will set the target time for the Inaugural Ben Cruachan Hill Climb, 6237ft up one of the finest Munros in the west Highlands, and starting with an inspirational talk, will cheer on and ride in the Sportive, which features 87 miles of course through some of the UK’s most stunning scenery.
World record setting athlete, broadcaster and sports ambassador Mark Beaumont
Mark recently starred in the successful Wild About Argyll campaign, which highlighted the area's many outdoor opportunities, and looks forward to coming back to Oban for the Sportive.
"I absolutely loved filming the Wild about Argyll adventures, showcasing all the cycling and many other sports you can get up to on the West coast," Mark said. "Through this I have made many friends in the Oban area and I am always up for any excuse to come back."
"The Ben Cruachan Hill Climb challenge and the Oban Sportive is a fantastic weekend of cycling in April and I will be there to cheer everyone on and ride as much as possible," shared Mark. "There is such a fantastic community of cyclists in the Oban area, many of whom I have cycled with, and I am sure they will put on an amazing series of events for all abilities. I am most looking forwards to the Hill Climb, which is so far out of my comfort zone as I am an endurance bike rider, so it will hurt like hell and should be a lot of fun!"
At 56 miles, the short course winds through mostly quiet single-track roads in Argyll, while the long route, at 87 miles, takes riders around Loch Awe. Both courses start and finish at Oban’s Atlantis Leisure Centre, with the the Sportive staff providing plenty of food stops and support.
Whether you are a seasoned pro or a keen amateur, the Oban Sportive will give you not only a rewarding challenge, but a chance to ride with Mark, meet and hang out with other like-minded cyclists, as well as enjoy all the stunning scenery and Highland hospitality that Oban and Lorn has to offer!
