Imagine Alba - bringing Scotland to you

Welcome!
I came to Scotland for love and stayed long enough for it to tilt my sense of the world. The Highland American follows that shift, tracing the stories, history and everyday chaos of a cottage with a mind of its own. It’s Scotland from the inside out—born from romance, shaped by curiosity, humour and the landscape that keeps me here.

About
I’m Michelle, the Highland American.
I’m an anthropologist, journalist, storyteller and tour guide whose work has carried me from the Mississippi Delta to the Levant to the Hebrides. These days I live in Argyll, Scotland with my husband, Rab.
I split my time between restoring a 300‑year‑old cottage, cooking, keeping a garden alive in west coast weather and playing the drums (while attempting to learn the bodhrán with the enthusiasm of a beginner and the technique of someone who should probably stick to a kit!)
I crossed an ocean and found a life built on love, history, sense of place and the kind of grit that gets you through a long winter. This is where I share it.
